Designing with restraint
The hardest part of a beautiful design system is everything you choose to leave out.
Anyone can add. Subtraction is the discipline that separates a portfolio piece from a product that lasts.
Constraints are a gift
A tight palette, two typefaces, one accent. Constraints don’t limit creativity — they focus it. The work gets sharper when the options get fewer.
A simple test
Before adding anything, ask:
- Does this earn its place?
- Would removing it lose meaning, or just decoration?
- Will it still feel right in two years?
If the answer is hazy, cut it. Clarity compounds.
