Designing with restraint

The hardest part of a beautiful design system is everything you choose to leave out.

Anyone can add. Subtraction is the discipline that separates a portfolio piece from a product that lasts.

Constraints are a gift

A tight palette, two typefaces, one accent. Constraints don’t limit creativity — they focus it. The work gets sharper when the options get fewer.

A simple test

Before adding anything, ask:

  1. Does this earn its place?
  2. Would removing it lose meaning, or just decoration?
  3. Will it still feel right in two years?

If the answer is hazy, cut it. Clarity compounds.
